Safety Notice: Recall for Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra Trucks Over Tailgate Concerns

Published on Mar 4, 2024 by Talia Mushinsky

Are you driving a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra from the years 2020 to 2024? If so, you'll want to read on about an important safety recall that may affect your vehicle.

General Motors (GM), the company behind these popular trucks, has announced a recall that impacts nearly 820,000 pickup trucks.

The reason? A Concern Has Arisen with the Tailgates On Some of These Vehicles

It turns out, the electronic mechanism that lets you open the tailgate might not work right if it gets wet. This could lead to the tailgate opening unexpectedly when the truck is parked. Imagine getting ready to drive and finding out your tailgate is open, and your stuff is gone!

GM has found out about this issue because over 130 people have reported their tailgate opened while they were driving. Fortunately, GM has clarified that this should only happen when the truck is parked. They've looked into it and shared that the way the truck's system is set up, the tailgate shouldn't open while you're moving. Still, they're advising everyone to double-check their tailgate is securely closed before hitting the road, just to be safe, until the recall work is done.

The recall isn't small; it covers more than 570,000 trucks in the United States. If you're wondering what the fix is, GM dealers will swap out the part that might let water in with one that's designed to keep water out.

A few people have even reported minor injuries or damage because of this issue. So, it's not something to take lightly. Safety first, always!

GM plans to start reaching out to truck owners affected by this recall on March 18. They'll let you know if your vehicle is one of those that need the tailgate switch replaced. It's all about keeping you and your belongings safe.

For anyone with a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra made between 2020 and 2024, please keep an eye out for communication from GM regarding this recall. And in the meantime, make sure to manually check your tailgate is secure before you drive. Safety measures like these are crucial for protecting your property and ensuring a safe driving experience.

Stay safe, and make sure to contact Kunes Chevrolet GMC of Lake Geneva's Service Team if you have any questions or concerns about this recall.

Remember, taking action now can prevent surprises later on the road.
